Access to Novell volume

Been a while but I thought I would just add how to connect to a novel volume. I found this site and it works well.

You need to make sure you do a:

sudo apt-get ipx
sudo apt-get libncp
sudo apt-get libpam-ncp
sudo apt-get ncpfs

in terminal first to install the required novel stuff. This could be done through Synaptic Package Manager but I can use that behind my firewall yet.

Day One

One my first day my goal was to get an install going. I had also seen Beryl on a youtube video and really wanted to see that in motion.

It took 2 goes but after a clean install and following the instructions I found I got to site back enjoy some impressive graphical displays that Beryl can offer.

The Test Machine

Because I need to keep working at work I decided to set up the Ubuntu build on a test machine. For this experiment I used a machine that we use at the college as our tech backup computer so that wee can make images and if a computer dies in the classroom - it is the spare.

The specs for the machine are quite impressive. It is an Intel Core 2 Duo 2400 with 2G RAM and an Nvidia 7300 GT. I was hoping that this machine would make the install easier.

Once I know if it is going to work I will install it on my current machine which is an AMD Athlon X2 (can't remember the speed).

The Ubuntu Move

On Thursday of last week I decided that it was time to give Ubuntu a go. I do not use windows at home. My 2 boys run xp and so does my wife (on her laptop). I use an iBook G4 (one of the last ones made). It's a great machine and I am a big mac fan.

At work I have an xp machine. We run a Novell network and most of the tools and utilities I use require a windows based machine. These include ConsoleOne, Maze (database software running on an SQL server) and Markbook.

So I decide that I would try to install Ubuntu as my primary work machine.

One of the reasons to give this a go was that I had experimented with vmware workstation and I thought this would allow me to access some the programs that just will not run on Ubuntu that I need. Also we are in the process of setting up a terminal server for remote access for staff at the school and I thought that I could also use this as a backup.
